Book Review:
Mike Meyer's A+ Certification Passport
I already had some PC hardware experience prior to studying
for the A+ certification, so while this book suited me perfectly, it may
not be suitable for someone who has absolutely no experience with computers.
Mike Meyer's has a pretty good reputation when it comes to exam preparation
for the Comptia exams - as such, I found the A+ Certification Passport
to be a fairly comprehensive book that covered most of the exam objectives.
I had read some reviews where the test candidates felt let-down by the
book's OS section, but I didn't find any fault in that department. Like
with any exam you take, you need to compliment your main source of study
information with as much independent material that you can. Likewise I
didn't just rely on the information from this book - I used it in conjunction
with the free study guides that you can find on the main A+
page.
The book comes complete with an accompanying CD which
has two interactive practice exams (one for the hardware section and one
for the operating system), a review section with questions for each chapter,
and a number of exam tips are scattered throughout the book. Again, don't
rely just on one set of practice questions as the basis for your study.
Try to do as many as you can from as many sources as you can to get a
broader range. In fact, if I have one criticism of the book, it's that
there are a number of questions in the practice tests on the CD that didn't
appear to be covered in the book itself. While that is a criticism, it's
also a bonus in the fact that when you come across instances like that,
you are required to then look up the answers in additional resources.
As it turned out, some of those questions/topics happened to be in the
actual A+ exam that I took so I was grateful for the extra enforced study.
What this book is, is a comprehensive guide to the information
you need to get qualified to A+ level. What this book isn't, is a braindump
for the A+ exam. If you use this book, and this book alone, you'll probably
pass the A+ exam but you might not get the score you want. If you use
this book along with the free study guides and other resources I've listed
on the A+ main page, I'm sure you'll pass with
flying colours.
