CNA Certification - Certified Novell Administrator

Free CNA study guides, practice questions and braindumps

The CNA, or Certified Novell Administrator, certification is Novell's entry-level certification track aimed directly at those candidates who already have a basic-to-intermediate understanding of networks, topologies, protocols, network administration etc., and who perhaps already work on a Novell platform or wish to do so.

For those of you who have done the CompTIA Network+ certification, you will find many similarities with Novell's CNA track in terms of subjects covered and the difficulty of the certification track (actually, Novell's website strongly recommends that candidates for the CNA certification should complete the Network+ beforehand, but this is not a pre-requisite). Obviously the main difference between the two certifications is that the CNA is vendor-specific to Novell systems, although many of the concepts covered in the CNA objectives and exam overlap into other systems as Novell are attempting to be make their exams more cross-platform friendly. Having said that though, make sure you know your LDAP from your NDS before setting foot in the exam testing room.

To obtain CNA certification a candidate must successfully pass just the one exam, namely;

050-653, Netware 5.1 Administration (if the candidate wishes to certify themselves in Netware 5.1)

or, either one of;

050-677 Foundations of Novell Networking

or

050-686 Foundations of Novell Networking; Netware 6.5

Obtaining CNA certification also adds one credit toward the more prestigous CNE certification (and if you're heading down the CNE track in Netware 5 then having either an MCSE or Network+ will gain you another credit).

While you could probably get through the CNA exam by pure book study alone, you really do need to either be working on a Novell system or have access to a suitable lab set-up to ensure you know the material well enough to pass the CNA exam. Anyone who has worked on a Novell system will be all too aware of the peculiarities of the system which, in turn, should prepare them well for the actual exam.

The CNA exam itself consists of between 60 to 70 questions, of which you have between 75 to 90 minutes total time available to answer (see here for further details) depending on which CNA exam you're taking. The CNA exam is in a traditional, linear format (meaning non-adaptive) and consists of the usual multi-choice, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank type of questions. Nothing out of the ordinary to trip you up.

I'd strongly advise that you book and pay for your CNA exam with a test voucher - you'll save yourself (or your employer) a bit of money and you'll get free training material thrown in as well. If you're not sure what these vouchers are, or why you need them, check out this site's section on Novell Test Vouchers. If you do know what they are, try here for good voucher bundles (I particularly recommend the test voucher/Transcender bundle).

Anyhow, I hope the links to some free CNA study resources on this and the following pages will be of use to you. I come across new material quite regularly so I'll attempt to update these pages as often as I can, so make sure to bookmark and come back regularly (and if you know of any good resources I can add here, please let me know (doc AT certification-crazy.net)).

Recommended reading: I used the 'Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare''. This book covered all of the exam objectives and was written in a not-too-technical style. I already had some hands-on experience with Novell, but the book would be equally suitable for someone new to the OS. But don't rely on just one source of information, and don't rely on just the test questions out of one book for your final test preparation. Try to do as many practice CNA questions as you can, and any areas that you feel you're not getting the answers right, then study some more.

(And don't forget to sign up for completely free computer magazines, including Network magazine, here).
