Helpful studying software

Here is a list of software that you might find of use, in one way or another, to help you study for your exams. All of the programs are either free, shareware, or have a lengthy free trial (certainly long enough to study for, and take, an exam). If you're going to make a career out of computers, you may as well use your computer to help you get there. I'd be interested to learn of any programs that you may have used to help you study for an exam - if you have any to suggest, please e-mail me.

Flash cards...

Flash cards are a great way to help you to memorise those hard to learn facts or figures that some of these computer certifications can be notorious for. Of course, in most cases you'll have to put in the hard work of typing out the questions and answers on the cards themselves, but I've found this to be a great way to learn the material. Here's a list of where you can find some pretty good free programs. There are heaps of them out there, and they really do help. I used 123 Flash Me and had no problems. If you go for others, try to find out if there are any other people out there who might be interested in swapping flash cards - you might save yourself a ton of work (but don't rely on other people's questions and answers - it's as risky as relying on braindumps. Maybe if time permits, I can set up a flash card 'swap shop' where you all can swap cards and help each other out.

Remote PC Access Software...

Not so much a study program, but a great way to access any study material that you might have at work or at home when you're not there. If you're like me, and have most of your study material on your home PC, this remote access software from GoToMyPC allows you to access your home PC from your work PC (or vice-versa) over the web. Particularly useful if you have study programs installed and want to access them for a bit of quick revision. All that is needed is a web connection for this program to work. You can sign up for a free month's trial which should be long enough for you to use it for what you need - heck, you may even want to keep it. Get a free copy here.

Transcender

What can I say about Transcenders? You probably know enough about them already, and if you don't, you should consider another career, 'cos computers aren't for you. Every set of questions I've had from them so far has been pretty spot on to the actual exam. Personally I use them as a final study guide, as it would be easy just to rely on them alone - but what you don't want to become is another 'paper MCSE'. There are enough Cowboy's in the I.T. industry already. They can appear a bit pricey, but compared to a book or a short course (where there are always other ways you can learn the material) you'll be hard pressed to find an alternative for these practice exams. You'll find a lot of free demo's here - not all exams are covered, but for those that are you'll end up with a 10-20 question head start on the actual exam at the very least just from the free demo - and if you can get your boss to pay for the whole thing, or make it a tax write-off, then you're away laughing). Probably the closest thing to the actual exam you'll find . Download their free demo's here.

Free Router Sims

If you're doing a certification that requires hands on experience with a router, like CCNA, then you should keep in mind the range of free router simulators that are available online. While there is no substitute for working on the actual equipment, in some cases that's not always possible and that's where a software alternative can really come in handy. Check out our page on free router sims for a list of the latest ones available for download.
