Do I need an exam voucher?

No. But it makes financial sense to get one as they will save you, or your company, money. Not only might you save money on the price of the exam, but you're likely to get a bundled study aid as part of the voucher price.

Are vouchers only valid in the U.S., or are there International vouchers?

Generally speaking vouchers are available for candidates both within the U.S. and internationally, but qualification or availability will vary depending on the vendor and the exam.

How much money will an exam voucher save me?

How much of a discount you get from the vendor really depends on when and from whom you buy the vouchers. If you purchase an exam voucher from a company with a high turn over of vouchers then you are likely to benefit from their ability to bulk-purchase. Also, vouchers that are nearing their expiry date are sometimes sold off very cheaply in an effort by the seller to see some return on their investment before the voucher becomes worthless.

Where can I use the exam voucher once I have bought it?

Vouchers can be used to book an exam with traditional testing facilities such as Prometric or VUE. Factors such as what exam you are taking, your location in the world and where you buy your voucher from will determine which testing facility the voucher is good for. It is important to be observant when buying an exam voucher that you know the limitations of the voucher terms. This is particularly of importance to those outside of the U.S. as vouchers may be limited to a particular testing vendor. In most instances, vouchers valid for one testing facility are not valid for any other testing facility. Likewise, vouchers purchased in one country are not redeemable in another country. Study the voucher's term and conditions carefully.

Why are exam vouchers always bundled to together with stuff I don't need?

Vendors, such as Microsoft and CompTIA offer memberships to their organisations that offer a number of benefits, one of which being the ability to buy discount vouchers in bulk. One rule of buying these vouchers however is that they cannot be on-sold to non-members unless they are offered together with other training material or services (the combined value of which must be more than the cost of the voucher itself). This essentially helps to preserve the value of membership to these organisations - after all, why become a member if you could simply buy the benefits whenever and wherever you wished?. For this reason all discount exam vouchers come bundled with all manner of different bunus material packaged up with them. So while you're unlikely to find much difference when it comes to voucher price from the various resellers, the real value of the voucher is what it comes bundled with. Irrespective however, the bundled cost of the exam voucher is still likely to be less than the cost of paying for the exam without a voucher.

How do exam vouchers work?

Certification vouchers come in two forms - electronic and paper. Both are nothing more than a serial number that you quote, hand over, or enter into a form when you make the booking with the testing station. No money changes hands between you and the testing station because you've already paid for the exam when you bought the voucher. Each voucher is good for one exam. If you are doing an exam with two distinct parts, like the A+, then you will need one voucher for each exam. If you fail one or both of the exams, then you will need to buy one or two more vouchers to re-take the exams.

How long are the vouchers valid for?

That really depends on the exam that your buying the voucher for and how long the seller has had the vouchers before you buy it. When a re-seller buys vouchers in bulk from CompTIA (using them as an example) then the vouchers will be valid for one year. If you come along after 6 months and buy one voucher from that batch then you will only have 6 months to complete the exam. By rights re-sellers should be offering a bigger discount for close-to-expiry exam vouchers, but it's just something to keep in mind. You can however use the vouchers immediately as soon as you get them.

As mentioned, you may see 'last minute' deals where you can pick up exam vouchers quite cheaply for vouchers that have a very limited life span left, but you need to ask yourself the question if saving 20 dollars, for example, is worth it if you need to rush your studying or don't have any room for any surprises to your studying schedule.

How long does it take to get my exam voucher once I've paid for it?

Normally, and certainly with the more reputable re-sellers, you should get your voucher within hours of sending payment. In some cases you may have to wait until the end of the next business day but certainly you shouldn't deal with re-sellers that make you wait longer than that.

Which exams can I use vouchers for?

Many of the main certification vendors have a voucher program but, if not, many run promotions from time to time. It always pays to keep an eye on the vendor's website for details on how you can save money taking their exams.
