The MCSE Server 2003 track is the last incarnation of the MCSE certification before Microsoft rolled out their new generation certification titles. The MCSE Windows Server 2003 requires the candidate to pass a total of 7 individual exams (6 core and 1 elective exam).
The ‘Core’ exams are split into 3 distinct sections:
- Client Operating system (one exam)
- Networking system (four exams)
- Design (one exam)
MCSE Server 2003 specialty tracks:
MCSE Server 2003 offers two specialty tracks, Messaging and Security, which deviate from the standard Server 2003 track thereby allowing candidates to focus their MCSE certification in those key areas.
MCSE: Messaging on Server 2003
The MCSE: Messaging on Server 2003 specialty certification is aimed at candidates who wish to shift the focus of their MCSE toward messaging technologies such as Exchange Server. The MCSE Messaging candidate must pass a total of 8 exams: the 6 core exams as outlined above as well as two Messaging specialization exams (the focus of these two exams being specifically on Exchange Server 2003).
MCSE: Security on Server 2003:
Candidates wishing to focus more on security concepts and issues can opt for the MCSE Security on Server 2003 specialization track. This track requires the candidate to pass a total of 8 exams - 6 ‘core’ exams (as outlined above) and 2 specialty security focused exams. The CompTIA Security+ certification can be substituted for one of the specialty elective exams.
