MCSE Windows 2000

The MCSE Windows 2000 certification track requires the candidate to pass no less than 7 individual exams based on the Windows 2000 platform. The exams themselves fall in to two distinct sections – ‘core’ and ‘elective’. You must pass 5 core exams, and 2 elective exams to gain the MCSE credential.

The ‘Core’ exams are further broken down into 3 distinct sections:

• Client Operating system (one exam must be passed from a choice of two)
• Networking system (three exams in this section, all must be passed)
• Design (one exam must be passed from a choice of six)

The ‘Elective’ exams require you to pass two exams from a choice of over 20 specialised topics, and recently Microsoft decided that acquiring the CompTIA Security+ (LINK) certification would be sufficient to substitute for one of the elective requirements.

MCSE Windows 2000 specialty tracks:

MCSE: Messaging on Windows 2000

As with the standard MCSE Windows 2000 track, the MCSE: Messaging on Windows 2000 specialty certification requires the candidate to pass the 5 core exams, in addition to two specialty-related exams.

The ‘Core’ exams are broken down into 3 constituent parts:

• Client Operating system (one exam must be passed from a choice of two)
• Networking system (three exams must be passed from a choice of three)
• Design (one exam must be passed from a choice of six)

The ‘Specialization’ or ‘Core Messaging’ section offers you the choice of two sets of two exams, of which you must select and pass one set (in other words, pass two exams).

MCSE: Security on Windows 2000

The MCSE: Security on Windows 2000 option requires the candidate to pass just 4 ‘core’ exams (as opposed to 5 with the standard MCSE track and the Messaging specialty track), but also three specialty security focused exams.

The ‘Core’ exams have two distinct sections:

• Client Operating System (one exam must be passed from a choice of two)
• Networking System (all three exams must be passed in this section)

The ‘specialization’ or ‘Security’ section is further broken down into 2 parts:

• Security Specialization: Core Design (one exam offered which must be passed)
• Security Specialization: Core Security (two exams need to be passed, one compulsory, the other a choice of two)
