MOS Certification
For each specific MOS certification track (i.e. Office 2010, 2007 or 2003) there are three distinct MOS credentials that can be earned:
• MOS Specialist (requires at least one exam to be passed)
• MOS Expert (requires at least one exam to be passed)
• MOS Master (requires four exams to be passed – 3 required, 1 elective)
MOS Specialist:
Candidates can earn a MOS Specialist credential for each of the individual Office applications - Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, or Excel (SharePoint at a later date) and complete as many or as few as they like. For example, should a candidate only wish to demonstrate knowledge of Microsoft Word 2010, they only need pass the one exam to become a MOS Word 2010 Specialist.
A candidate will earn the MOS Specialist certification for each subject when they pass the one respective ‘specialist level’ exam for each application. The MOS Specialist can be earned on any application (Word, Excel etc.) across any track (Office 2003, 2007 or 2010).
MOS Expert:
Two of the Microsoft Office applications offer the MOS Expert credential – Word and Excel. There are no expert-level exams available for Outlook, Access or PowerPoint.
To earn the MOS Expert credential candidates need to pass just the one respective ‘Expert’ exam. Candidates do not need to pass the specialist-level exam first to take the expert exam.
The MOS Expert can be earned on Word or Excel (or both) across any track (Office 2003, 2007 or 2010)
MOS Master:
To gain the MOS Master credential (for any of the tracks, Office 2010, 2007 or 2003) a candidate needs to pass a total of four exams – three required, and one elective. In all tracks, the three required exams are:
• Word (Expert)
• Excel (Expert)
• PowerPoint
The one elective exam can be chosen from either Outlook or Access.
Only when all four exams have been successfully passed will the candidate earn the MOS Master credential (although as a candidate works through the list and each exam is passed the respective MOS Specialist or MOS Expert certificate will be awarded). If a candidate wishes to take the specialist-level exam for either Word or Excel prior to trying the expert-level they may do so, but it is not compulsory.
Exam objectives for all of the applications and tracks can be found on the Certiport website
