Solaris is Sun Microsystem's Unix-based operating system, the latest incarnation being version 10. For those wishing to pursue a Solaris certification, there are three main certification tracks:
- Sun Certified System Administrator (SCSA)
- Sun Certified Network Administrator (SCNA)
- Sun Certified Security Administrator (SCSECA)
The SCSA is Sun's entry-level Solaris administration certification, with the SCNA and the SCSECA being more advanced, specialized certification tracks.
The SCSA is a prerequisite for the SCNA (however not the SCSECA) meaning you must become SCSA qualified before you are eligible for the SCNA track. The SCSA and SCNA Solaris certification tracks currently cover the Solaris 8, 9 and 10 operating systems, while the SCSECA is available only in versions 9 and 10 of the Solaris OS.
The exams can be taken at any Prometric testing centre around the world and, at the time of writing, each specific Solaris exam costs US$200 (but check availability and pricing with your local testing centre well before you intend to take the exam).
Because candidates are tested on a particular version of the Solaris OS, there is no requirement to recertify in order to remain Solaris certified. Candidates remain certified for life for the particular Solaris OS version on which they gained the Solaris certification. If a candidate wishes to upgrade an existing Solaris certification to a newer version then in most cases there are upgrade exams available.
